Day 2: D&L Trail - Mountain Top to Jim Thorpe
Cycling: 35 Miles
We depart for D&L Black Diamond trailhead where we’ll hop on the bikes and begin our adventure with an exciting 35 mile ride through the spectacularly beautiful Lehigh Gorge. The gentle, downhill slope makes cycling a delight as we meander through the gorge along its namesake river, with stunning scenery in every direction. We’ll stop in White Haven where you may have to indulge in the almost obligatory trail-side ice cream. Continuing on, we’ll pass beautiful Butternut Falls, and the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway, before reaching super charming Jim Thorpe. After settling into the hotel you’ll have a wonderful evening strolling through town, and of course enjoying a scrumptious dinner!
Day 3: D&L Trail - Jim Thorpe to Easton
Cycling: 37 Miles
This morning we bid farewell to lovely Jim Thorpe, jump on the bikes and hit the trail, and while the gorge is now in the rearview mirror, our course continues along the beautiful Lehigh River taking us through the charming little towns that dot its banks. We’ll stop for a trailside picnic in lovely North Hampton, where we’ll also cycle the nearby Ironton Trail with interesting relics of the steel and coal days displayed along its path. After lunch we wrap up our last few miles on the Nor-Bath trail, where we load the bikes for a short shuttle to charming Easton PA and our overnight stay.
Day 4: D&L Trail – Easton to Washington Crossing
Cycling: 44 Miles
Today we’ll wrap up our cycling on the D&L. While the Lehigh River diverges west, our course now follows the Delaware River which had been “canalized” and heavily used for trade and commerce during the mid-1800’s. As we cycle we’ll encounter many of the historic artifacts that are still intact along the canal. We stop for lunch in lovely New Hope with wonderful eateries and shops. After lunch it’s onto historic Washington Crossing National Historic Park where we’re immersed in the history of Washington’s Crossing of the Delaware during the American Revolution. We end the day with a short shuttle to Valley Forge where our amazing adventure continues.
Day 5: Schuylkill River Trail – Reading to Valley Forge
Cycling: 45 Miles
We begin with a short shuttle to the SRT Trailhead in Reading, where our journey for the next two days will follow the beautiful Schuylkill River Trail. We cycle across the historically rich region of southeastern PA taking us through rural, agricultural, suburban, and industrial landscapes, providing everchanging scenery. Along today’s route we’re treated to the historic communities of Morlatton and Fricks Locks Villages. Both are well preserved relics offering a glimpse of what life was like in a 1700’s Swede community. After a great day of cycling we’ll regroup to enjoy a dinner social to share fun, food and stories about our adventures!
Day 6: Schuylkill River Trail – Valley Forge to Philadelphia
Cycling: 23 Miles
Today you’ll have the entire morning to explore Valley Forge National Historic Park. The fort played a crucial role in the American Revolutionary War as it was where George Washington and his troops struggled to survive during the brutal winter of 1777-78. The site of the fort spans hundreds of acres and includes barracks, battlefields, artillery depots and more, and the beautiful sprawling grounds are perfect for cycling. After your visit, we’ll have a picnic lunch, then it’s back on the bikes as we wrap up the SRT enjoying fabulous cycling on our way to lively Philadelphia.
After completing our day of cycling we’ll shuttle guests to the Philadelphia Airport where you’ll make your own plans for homebound or onward travel.
