The trail runs along the bottom of the gorge offering stunning scenery, including steep, forested canyon walls, dramatic rock outcrops, waterfalls, and views of the creek itself. Don’t be intimidated by the 62 miles, there is a significant downhill slope making for an exciting and easy glide to Lock Haven!
Day 3: Redbank Valley Trail (46 Miles)
Redbank Valley Trail meanders with its namesake Redbank Creek for nearly its entire length offering endless views of the creek and valley in every direction. The trail travels through mostly undeveloped, natural areas, providing serene and picturesque cycling, interrupted occasionally for impressive stone-arch bridges, and the Climax and Point tunnels, which adds to the unique character of this outstanding trail. In the evening we’ll enjoy a fabulous overnight at the historic Foxburg Inn.
Day 4: Allegheny River & Armstrong Trails (50 Miles)
Today we get a 2-fer, starting with 20 miles on the beautiful and tranquil Allegheny River Trail. This will take us right back to Foxburg where we’ll have lunch then load the bikes for a quick shuttle to the Armstrong Trail. In only 1.5 miles we reach the 2468’ Brady Tunnel. The Armstrong trail closely follows the east bank of the Allegheny River, and along the route we’ll pass furnaces and coal towers, remnants of the industrial history of the area. In the evening we’ll join together for dinner where we can share stories of our adventures.
Day 5: Ghost Town Trail (32 Miles)
The super cool Ghost Town Trail passes through what were once bustling coal towns connected by the former Ebensburg and Black Lick Railroad. Scattered along the trail are remnants of the abandoned coal mining and iron-making sites that operated along the line. The trail passes massive iron furnaces, long-abandoned tipples (equipment used to load railroad cars with coal), old railroad ties, and other artifacts attesting to the path’s industrial past. At the end of today’s ride, we’ll head for the vibrant and diverse city of Pittsburgh, which will be our homebase for the remainder of the tour.
Day 6: Three Rivers Heritage Trail (15 Miles)
Today we’ll head out for a guided ride as we Bike the ‘Burgh! We’ll begin with 7 miles on the famous GAP which will bring us to Point State Park in the center of downtown Pittsburgh. From there we’ll cycle around town stopping to explore cool points of interest like Fort Duquesne, Eyeball Park, several of Pitt’s famed bridges. We’ll stop for lunch at famous Primanti Bros, before hitting our final stop at super cool Bike Heaven. After our guided ride you’ll have the rest of the day and evening to explore the rest of the Burg on your own. Highly recommended is the Andy Warhol Museum.
Day 7: Montour Trail (47 Miles)
The Montour Trail forms a semicircle around greater Pittsburgh and is one of the longest suburban rail trails in the United States. Dotted by historic bridges, trestles, viaducts, and tunnels, including the Chartiers Creek High Bridge and Enlow Tunnel, the Montour Trail rambles through the colorful Western Pennsylvania landscape providing fabulous scenery along the way.
